Michael Murphy

Corrections Consultant

Mr. Murphy began his career in 1981 as a Juvenile Caseworker in Massachusetts. He moved to San Francisco in 1983 to work as a Correctional Officer/Case Manager at the very first privately operated prison in La Honda, California under contract with the Federal Bureau of Prisons (FBOP) with Eclectic Communications, Inc. (ECI). He was subsequently promoted to Deputy Warden of Operations, and then to Facility Director of FBOP halfway house in San Francisco in 1986. In 1990, he was designated as a Corporate Compliance Director for ECI where he accredited 8 prisons and reentry centers in compliance with the American Correctional Association (ACA). He also assisted the company executives in RFP development and startups of several new facilities for ECI. In 1991, Mr. Murphy was promoted to Regional Administrator of the Northern California Region for ECI over seeing several prisons and residential reentry centers under contract with FBOP and the California Department of Corrections (CDC). In this position, he was certified as an ACA Auditor and conducted numerous prison audits for the ACA across the country.

ECI was purchased by Cornell Corrections, Inc. (CCI) in 1995. During the acquisition, Mr. Murphy was assigned by the CEO to be a Vice President of Operations & Business Development, utilizing his combination of operations and business development skills to develop new opportunities in North Carolina.

After serving as Vice President of Operations & BD for CCI for approximately two years, he joined Management & Training Corporation (MTC) as a Vice president of Marketing & Business Development in 1997. His specific oversite encompassed MTC’s United States territory as wells the countries of the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Abu Dhabi, and South Africa. Mr. Murphy assisted MTC in growing their Corrections portfolio from $35 million in annual sales in 1997 to over $500 million in 2019. Mr. Murphy teamed on several design-build projects with MTC for over 20 years as the lead bidder and assisted in the construction and renovation of prisons and correctional facilities worth over $1 billion.

In August 2019, Mr. Murphy left MTC after 22 years and joined Corizon Healthcare Inc., the largest correctional healthcare company in the United States. He was appointed as a senior Vice President of Operations over 7 states with annual revenues of over $600 million. In December 2021, Corizon was acquired by YesCare, Inc. Mr. Murphy was appointed as Senior Vice President of Business Development & Client Relations by the ownership group. Consequently, Mr. Murphy transitioned to a Board Position with YesCare in October 2022 but subsequently resigned to start his own consulting business.

Mr. Murphy is a native of Springfield, Massachusetts. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Law Enforcement & Social Work from North Adams State College (1980) in North Adams, Massachusetts.
